JULY, 2006

MEN’S WORLD JUNIOR SQUASH CHAMPIONSHIPS

New Zealand play host to the Men’s World Junior Individual and Teams Championships.  The Individual Championship commenced at Palmerston North on 16 July and will conclude on 22 July.
This will be followed by the Teams Championship from 23 – 28 July.
A total of 126 players from 19 countries entered the Individual Championship, with Egypt’s Ramy Askour seeded No. 1 who is hoping to win a  second World Junior Men’s title.
Pakistan’s Aamir Atlas Khan is seeded No. 2 for the Individual, with another Egyptian, Omar Mosaad seeded No. 3 and Simon Rosner of Germany at No. 4.
These Championships provide a great opportunity for squash enthusiasts in the Oceania region to see top quality players in action and at the same time soak up the atmosphere of a world event.

SQUASH COURT TECHNOLOGY ADVANCES

The first professional event to be played on an “all glass” court, took place from 4 – 9 July in India.  The event – the “Qatar Airways Challenge” was held in Hyderabad, India’s fifth largest metropolis.
All glass walls have been a revolutionary feature of squash for some time, but the new “all” glass court is unique in that it includes a glass floor.
Manufacturers ASB claim that the floor is absolutely anti-skid, elastic and even.  The colour is determined by what is under the floor, which will be a big plus for advertising.

Players from Australia and New Zealand are included in the impressive receipt of entries for the Championships, being hosted by the Norfolk Island Squash Association.
