I looked around and there it was, a big fat bloke in a red suit and a white beard. If i had not learned to trust what i saw, I would have sworn that the month was April, May at the latest.
But sure enough, it was December, and whilst not every celebrates Christmas, this is the time of year of annual celebrations and holidays for many cultures.
In Australia, it is a predominantly Christian celebration of the birth of Jesus, however, I must admit to not taking a lot of notice of this element of the celebrations.
To me, this time of year is one where we take stock of what we have, and attempt to figure out where we are going in the following year.
I have probably mentioned similar sentiments in the past, but for me personally, this is a time to be thankful for how lucky I am, to have a good family, for all my family to be relatively healthy and happy and to have the wherewithall to be able to survive on a daily basis.
I have reason to be optimistic that 2010 will be a very good year for me.
Most people in modern western societies are very fortunate that there is little chance that they will go hungry or be homeless, yet this is a fact of life for millions of people throughout the world on a daily basis. Many have no security or certainty thay will survive the next day or the next week.
For many, there will be no reason nor any capacity to celebrate this holiday season. There will be no gifts, no special feasts, just the daily grind of survival.
So perhaps when you might be thinking about how much more you could or should have, also spare a though for all those who have a lot less.
Cherish family, friends and good health.
Put aside petty differences that have separated you from others that have been close to you and embrace them.
Be thankful that you have survived another year and that another is just around the corner to challenge and inspire us.
Rita and I wish all Squashgame.info readers a happy holiday season and a safe, peaceful and prosperous 2010. Thank you all for your contributions to Squashgame and I hope it continues into the future.
