Hey guys
Me n my house mate play squash almost every day and i am won derin how long your average squash ball lasts before it needs replacing...We both hit the ball hard (harder than neccessayr to be honest) and play for 40 mins at a time (all we re allowed)
So - how long do u keep a ball before taking a new one out of the pack?
Dave

All comments are double yellow unless stated...
wilson are rubbish
Alinta are good quality but seem a little bouncier than dunlops
Grays are nice
Dunlop is the standard. I think the Grays ball is better (atleast on the courts I practice on, where I prefer the grays).
Head makes a real nice single yellow that seems to last a long time.
Consolidated Merco was the best single dot I ever played with i reckon - pity theyve gone.
As for how long they last...
Ive had solo sessions where Ive broken 3 new balls. Dunlops and grays. Thats over the course of a 2 hour practice. I have a grays in my bag that Ive had for atleast 15 hours of mostly matchplay - I keep waiting for it to break n it doesnt, but a grays I bought at the same time (from the same box) broke after an hour solo hitting.
I dont hit the ball particularly hard but I do use a fair bit of spin. I know a bloke in sydney who could break brand new balls first shot (4 in a row was his record).
It is a bit like 'how long is a piece of string?' god knows - as viper says - until they break. Or when it looks all shiny n yucky. I like em when the brand has just about worn off - I reckon theyre perfect then.

I use a squash ball for around 8 to 10 hours of court time, then I donate it to the club for use on club night. By this time, a ball is usually worn (getting soft spots) or has lost its surface (becoming shiney). The courts can make a lot of difference to this as some courts exact more wear on the ball than others.
As a rule I play with a ball until
- It becomes shiney and "skids" on the floor during play
- It becomes soft in parts (esp. around the join)
- It breaks!
- It gets stolen!!
Hope that helps

Agreed - I use mine until they break!
I have gone months with the same ball playing at the club - and its as shiny as ever!
