From January 23/29 the top sixteen players can be seen at Grand Central Terminal, New York, for the Tournament of Champions.  Ramy Ashhour (EGY) is the defending champion.  There will not be too much rest for these players over the festive season.

Greg Gaultier (FRA) defeated Nick Matthews (ENG) in the final.  The two Egyptians, Karim Darwish and Ramy Ashour, got beaten in the semis - this goes to show there is not much between the top men players.

For the first time in years there will be no Egyptians in the finals of the TOC!

Top-seeds R. Ashour and Darwish have been eliminated, losing to Matthew and Gaultier respectively, tonight in the semi-final round of the tournament. Lobbing nearly every attacking shot and taking away any open angles, Matthew played very tactical squash and succeeded in restricing Ramy to the back of the court. Ramy was able to find a few nicks, but his confidence was clearly lacking. By the end of the fourth game, Ramy seemed resigned to concede the match, and the unseeded Matthew pushed through to secure his place in the final.

Gaultier played some equally inspired squash and managed to frustrate his opponent with seemingly impossible gets. After losing the first game 2-11, Gaultier found his stride and came back in force winning 12-10, 11-5, and 11-6 with very strong positional play. More to come!

Not too much rest, but plenty of festive season activities to fuel the appetite for the top sixteen players heading to the JP Morgan Tournament of Champions NY.  The two Egyptians, Amr Shabana and Karim Darwish seeded 1 and 2 respectively.  What a smorgasboard for those able to attend.

Unless Julian Illingworth and Natalie Grangier happen to win the tournament the prize money will be more valuable than a year ago too, since the US dollar is now a lot stronger against most currencies.
