All Power to Technique

I watched a match between Ricketts and Power the other night on PSA Live and, not surprisingly learnt something. Or, to be more accurate, relearnt something. Not having seen Power play for some time (no ice hockey either), I was immediately, impressed, surprised and reminded by his extremely quick racket swing technique..
This technique is what creates what many term wizardry. Well, his racket is not exactly a magic wand, but he is able to produce some great shots, especially when you consider the speed and quality of his opponents. Of course, it is not just his fast swing that creates this magic. In fact if it were just this, there would be no magic at all. It is my old favourite, the open face racket, which is doing the damage. The quick swing is hard to read and the open face shot is effective at "killing" the ball. It is a deadly combination.
Quite a few years ago, as I endeavoured to become more deceptive, I tried to do exactly what Power has mastery over, but more recently I have not been paying enough attention to the basics of this. This match reminded me.
So after a short practice game with a team mate in which I endeavoured to achieve this style of play, (and only partially succeeded), I spent an hour trying to iron out the technique. At the start I was very inconsistent, but with a few adjustments and some concentrated effort, the end of the hour saw me hitting the ball more accurately. Better preparation and an increase in the openness of the racket face really made a difference.
It will be interesting if I can go someway to putting it into practice during the week.

I have to agree on one thing - JP has incredibly mastered counterdrop technique. Man, you can't see what he's doing with the racket and the ball...
