Viper - under SquashNews I have put the article circulated re the appointment.
Karen is a relatively young coach but has been coaching since finishing playing and has had experience with the young kids, and school programs, as well as squads, etc so she has good background knowledge and has worked her way up through the ranks.
These facts would have held her in good stead as many of our coaches have been top players and then transferred across to coaching at the top without the background experience.
Karen has obviously chosen squash coaching as a career and has gradually worked her way through the levels.
She has also held various administrative positions, and Association appointments, which all adds to the experience so the VIS should know exactly what they are getting and the value.
There would be little time lost in her settling in as she will be very familiar with the players, the staff, etc.

Yes Viper I did exactly what you did and came to the same conclusion - no correlation between the sites at all and one had not been updated since 2005 so....

I doubt if the appointment would be in-house but would go on its merit.  It is always difficult to get the right applicant when it is a part-time position too as that would not be attractive to a person, unless they have extra means, to relocate to Victoria for the job.

Knowledge/experience that would be good for these coaches would be:
  • Level 2/3 Coach (which require First Aid Cert and Referee qualifications)
  • Level 1/2 Strength and Conditioning
  • Certificate in Workplace Assessment and Training (Train the Trainer).
  • Track record with coaching elite players.
  • Team Management Skills
  • Honorary positions held and contribution to squash overall (experience).
All else being equal I guess it will be about age, playing ability, presentation, management, computerisation, and past initiatives.

If anyone is aspiring to apply for higher jobs in coaching I hope this gives them a few more ideas on what to do......maybe

Richard Cagliarini

Coach
Karen Morrissey* Coach
Marc O'Brien Coach
Neil Young Coach

You would presume they would select from within their own ranks, yes ? It will be interesting.

Yes the Squash Australia website directs to the VIS website which directs to the Golf appointment, then entering the squash section of the VIS there is absolutely no reference to the most important posting of head coach......go figure ?

Viper - I have just gone back to the source of the info above and that was the link provided. Yes the Dept of Sport in conjunction with the VIS (Paul Vear) would be the main persons responsible in the selection process.  They would be the ones paying the bills for sure.

We will wait for the surprise.

My God he/she will have to be multi talented :

Applications are being called from suitably qualified coaches for the part-time position of Assistant Golf Coach in the Victorian Institute of Sport (VIS) golf Program.

As to the real job (which does not seem to listed at all ! , makes you worry about the organisation you are about to apply to mind you, shakes head at yet another squash gem  )  most important skill would be communication for my mind. Something Squash Australia is clearly struggling with !

Apparently there are 3 contenders for the job - the appointment will be an interesting one.
Question in my mind - in what order of priority is the criteria for the appointment.?
