Those who follow this blog will have noticed a clash between myself and my former coach and partner in SquashGame. Well Rita, if you are reading this, you will have been very pleased with my performance last night. I played more drop shots, lobs, boasts etc, etc. The problem was, I got an absolute thrashing.

Of course I did not intend  to this, in fact I intended to follow what I have been discussing over the past few days. I executed perfectly for the first two rallies. I was moving early and well, hitting the ball cleanly and accurately and competing with an opponent who is considerably better than that from the previous night.

Then it happened - a terrorist caught a bus into my brain and exploded it!

Wanted to play 50 different shot in each rally and three different shot on each shot. (Yes, what i had been doing previously which I was trying to avoid) As a consequence I spent the rest of the game chasing after the ball like a madman, getting totally exhausted in the process. I did regroup somewhat towards the end of the game, but by then it was too late.

I battled a little better in the second (although still not disciplined enough) get to eight all, but he upped the pace, and I had no gas left in the tank at all. The third was somewhat of a procession as I still had not recovered from the second. I fought very hard toward the end but did not have enough get up and go - it had got up and went!

My grail has get to be to maintain my composure under pressure - I have got to stop my mind from going into this trance like state.

Summing up - I failed dismally to carry out my goal previously mentioned. I cannot blame anyone but myself. I will have to improve! The only area where I gained some satisfaction is that I covered his short shots better than previously (an area where he really had beaten me badly in previous meetings)

Morning Walk
The usual

Morning Swim
A little harder today because of remaining soreness in the shoulders  this will pass. This has to be improving my aerobic capacity!

Ray - this is the day to day trials of a squash player trying to perform well consistently including making a comeback or recovering from injury - JOIN the club of people out there.
  • Losing is not a problem really so long as you learn something from it..
  •  And, of course  the analysis feels worse, since you have excellent knowledge and are naturally more awareness of your limitations, etc.
  • I bet your opponent on Monday night just swore about you, and kicked the cat when he got home and thought no more about it.  He may have also said "I'll get that b...ard next time".
What you say above, about your next week's playing idea, is good in the main.
  • I would like to hear something about controlling the ball, or the pace, which in turn will help your mind settle down too, and not make you so exhausted, and give more time.  The bad part of that is it must be tight to the wall, and hopefully set up a shot for you. I am talking about length by the way.
  • When your brain starts to fry from the heat, the tension, and frustration, keep going by retrieving with controlled, high, tight, deep shots - do not come into the trap of trying to win by a quick drop shot just for the hell of it as you are buggered and gamble on a winner.
  • Get to the ball early is good, then wait is good sometimes too, but only get in early and thrash it if it is away from the wall and there is room to hit a good angle into the corner.
  • Then when you feel a bit more composed, go for it for a couple of points, then revert to the control again, and so on.
If you are "Kangaroo like Palmer........" you would have different concerns - don't try to play like Palmer, or any of the tennis players we have been seeing on TV - that is not possible..

Ray, you can do this, and you do know how,  please "don't get your hair in a knot"
