Woops my big mouth - anyway I will have a go at trying to summarise the basic concept around the PSA and WISPA Ranking Points System as taken from a 80/100 page  document:

1. Total points accumulated over a 52 week period.
2. Minimum number of tournaments is 10 in a 52 week period.
3.Formula to give and average:

• 52 weeks = x points divided by number of tournaments

Here is the link to the PSA rankings points over several tournaments in 2006

Bands are used to determine points, eg

• Satellite    ..........................$3000 - 6000
• 1 Star        ...................... ..  6,000 - 0000
• 1.5 Star    ......................... 15000
• 2 Star................................ 20000
• 2.5 Star ...........................  25000
• 3 Star    ...........................  30000
• 4 Star    ..........................   40000
• 5 Star   ..........................    50000

An example of the Star System points allocation:

• 5 Star Winner receives 875 points, Finalist 575, etc
• There are also criteria for 64 Draw, 32 Draw, 16 Draw etc,
• Depending on the tournament clasfification there is accommodation, transport, food, etc. covered and criteria set.

It is all a bit difficult to explain precisely but the above gives the general idea for your information.

adz - I think there is a formula for the points ranking system and I tried to find it on PSA and WSF but could not.   It goes something like this, as far as I understand. For example the Wavell tournament is to be conducted next month and there is prizemoney of $4000AU and it probably will not attract a bunch of WR contestants (good bet nil), so if you win the Open, the points scale will be very low. And, sadly, not worth the top players to enter the country.
To attract top players you need top points ranking for the tournament, as well as top dollars for the prizes.  When tournaments have qualifying rounds to enter the main draw that is a very attractive tournament for points scoring.
There are some special ingredients to get the ranking points, eg at least 4 or 6 WR men and women enter and it is a bit of the chicken and the egg then.  More seeds, bigger dollars for the winners, runnerup etc. better points.

I will try to find out the exact criteria.

Azam, if you mean on the PSA tour, each event is given a certain level of ranking points based on level of entry. A top event will have more poitns on offer for the qualifiers than the final of a bottom event (for example!).

Players earn points dependant on who they beat and what round they reach. A good example of how ranking points are used can be found on the SquashWales.co.uk website.

If you look under the ranking section, you can see how each individual player gained / lost ranking points depending of who they played in the local leagues, and in the cases of players who play graded tournaments, you can see how many round bonus points they gained for reaching certain stages of the competition.
