It is a good idea to step in and hit the Return of Serve on the Volley.  However, especially on the backhand, it seems easier to let it bounce, but then there is a risk of getting trapped in the back corner. Things to help volley the serve:

  • Stand forward (not too far from the corner of the serve box) when receiving.
  • Keep out of the back corner.
  • Watch the Server, to get some early clues to the type of serve, and angle of the ball.
  • Have the racket in a "ready" position.
  • Turn the shoulders to face the side wall, and the racket will follow in preparation for the shot.

Check out the Squash Library/Return Serve link for diagrams and more information.
